The birds and the bees

by J. Christoph Amberger

What a difference a week makes!

Last Monday, school started. For weeks the Amberger children had dealt with the prospects according to their individual disposition. My daughter was giddily looking forward to second grade, her girlfriends and her teacher. My 10-year old son had tears in his eyes whenever he was thinking about fifth grade.

My eighth-grader responded to paternal inquiries with monosyllabic grunts and mumbles that I couldn’t quite make out.

I still don’t know if he was happy to be back in school or happy to be out of fencing camp. (I concede, eight hours of push-ups, sit-ups, footwork and conditioning for five days straight may have soured him on summer vacation.)

But today, something was different. The young man had decked himself out in his new pair of black Vans sneakers (size 12 1/2) worn with fashionable ankle-high white socks. The dark brown cowlick on the back of his head had been straightened with water and patient brushing into a texture resembling the pelt of a hand-groomed otter.

And as he thundered down the stairs, he exuded clouds of Paco Rabanne cologne, purloined from his old man.

(Back in the ‘80s, this was the stuff that separated the men from the boys. Or so I was told...)

And this from the boy who just a month ago had made it through a weeklong Boy Scout camp without using more than two pairs of boxer shorts!

The Pauline conversion from ragamuffin to chick magnet did not pass unnoticed. His mother reacted to the olfactory delights filling the kitchen the same way she responds to my splashing on a dash of Paco... with a theatrical waving of hands and realistic-sounding gagging noises.

Women!

Darned if you do; darned if you don’t.

-- Steve Chapman recently had a few choice words about alternative fuels that I liked. He writes:

“If things are ever going to change, the time is now. Gas prices have more than tripled since 2002, and even after adjustment for inflation, they are higher than at any time since the early 1980s. Alternative fuel suppliers merely have to offer something cheaper, and they would have Big Oil on the run. Instead, they prefer to rely on handouts from government. (...)

“Reducing oil consumption, in an effort to weaken oil-producing nations and combat global warming, is a perfectly sensible idea. But asking the government to decide the best alternatives is like asking the government to decide what products Home Depot should stock.”

But judging from the campaign commercials for the upcoming primaries, it looks like there is no shortage of bozos running for office who’d not only love to tell Home Depot what products to stock, but how much profit they’re allowed to make on them.

No idea seems bad and tired enough to be recycled as a political platform. When I hear that, I can’t help reacting... with a theatrical waving of hands and realistic-sounding gagging noises.

Gas for America

by Christian DeHaemer

The ice is melting in the Arctic, uncovering up to 25% of the globe’s remaining oil deposits.

The world is running out of oil. Peak oil arguments are rapid. The hunt is on for more energy. The one of the last -- and best -- places to find it is in the Arctic, like the Barents Sea on the northernmost tip of Norway.

In a frozen wasteland called Hammerfest (Hammerfrost in English) the reindeer roam the streets and the off-duty workers fill the bars for the only recreation available. Claiming to be the northernmost city in the world, its 6,000 inhabitants make money from the ancient craft of fishing and the ultramodern profession of extracting natural gas from under the dark, cold water of the region.

The cod stocks are running out, but a new moneymaker is in town. A gigantic gas-processing plant looms over the muddy main street. The plant sits on the butt end of gas pipes running more than 90 miles off the coast -- out into the cold and dark reaches of the Barents Sea. Then the processed gas is shipped directly to America.

The Arctic, the best oil reservoir in the world

But Norway isn’t the only player. It’s not even the best. According to Forbes, the BBC and the Wall Street Journal, up to 25% of the world’s remaining deposits are found in the Arctic. And the rush is on. Five countries that rim the Arctic -- the United States, Russia, Canada, Greenland and Denmark -- are in the hunt.

This story is in the early stages. But look for companies to move fast. Just today, Canadian Oil Sands Limited bought 65% of the shares in Canadian Southern Petroleum, the former owners of the Kotaneelee gas fields in the southeast corner of the Yukon.

Canadian Southern owned some fields in southern Yukon, but Marcel Coutu, chair of Canadian Oil Sands, says his company bought Canadian Southern because of its gas properties in the Arctic.

“We have already engaged a financial advisor to market those properties, so in due course they will be put on the market for other oil and gas producers to bid on.”

According to Coutu, the Kotaneelee gas field could go on the auction block as early as next month. Coutu said he is confident the buyer will keep the gas flowing to market, and millions of dollars of royalty taxes will continue to flow into Yukon government bank accounts.

And that’s not all, there’s an unheard-of pure play coming out next year…

Government’s sales plans

According to The Moscow Times, the Russian government plans to sell all or part of 1,579 companies and auction 327 real estate properties next year. One of them will be Sevmorneftegeofizika, a geological company that tests for oil and gas below the Arctic Ocean’s floor.

Just don’t ask me how to pronounce it. But you can believe if it passes my due diligence, I’ll be recommending it.

The Yukon’s only producing gas wells are changing hands and will likely be up for auction again within a matter of weeks.

The government plans to sell all or part of 1,579 companies and auction 327 real estate properties next year, Interfax reported, citing the government press service.

The government will sell 0.0003% of SeverStal, all of the Moscow Polymetals Plant, a maker of nuclear-reactor components, and 100% of Sevmorneftegeofizika, a geological company that tests for oil and gas below the Arctic Ocean’s floor, the Interfax reported Wednesday.

On August 25, Prime Minister Mikhail Fradkov approved the list of assets to be sold. (Source:Bloomberg)
