In hindsight, it seems obvious. But the next tech revolution is finally starting to really get started. As you can see from the chart above, the race has already begun. Shares of Garmin (GRMN) and Navteq (NVT) have been flying over the past three months.
GPS is here to stay. But Garmin is going to miss out on the big prize. According to research from In-Stat, approximately 47 million Portable Navigation Devices––that’s what Garmin makes––and more than 436 million mobile phones with GPS technology will ship in 2010.
Tech consulting firm Juniper Research says, “The total available market for mobile GPS will rise from $1 billion in 2005 to $8.5 billion by 2010.” That’s 750% growth in just five years.
But, after years of holding out, the cell phone service providers are finally starting to get on board. SprintNextel has just rolled out GPS service to its 60 million subscribers. And the Wall Street Journal says, “Sprint has been the most aggressive, but Verizon and AT&T have big plans for location services, too.”
GPS is a big trend of which investors have to be aware. Thankfully, we’re still in the early stages. Motorola has just released its first GPS-enabled phone. And Nokia is reportedly in talks to buy Navteq. The writing is on the wall in the GPS industry.
My top pick in the GPS revolution is starting to catch up to the headline makers like Garmin and Navteq. But with these two stocks already off and running and looking very expensive, it’s now time to play the laggards.
Most investors have already realized that GPS is coming and have started to invest in the obvious plays on the industry. However, the next leg of the revolution, when we start seeing GPS technology appear in cell phones and laptop computers, is going to be 10 times bigger.
My top behind-the-scenes GPS play has just started attracting a little bit of attention from Wall Street. Credit Suisse just upgraded it to “outperform” and stated, “[It] will be shipping chips to certain high-end Motorola handsets with their new lineup.”
Motorola is just one of several top cell-phone manufacturer this company has on its long list of deep-pocketed and committed customers. This news has sent shares climbing 30% in the past month. Learn more about my top GPS play here.
