Screams from the Grave... Ortega Win to Strengthen the "Confederation of Terrorist States

Dear American Capitalist Reader,

Years before the naming of the Axis of Evil and 9/11, Ronald Reagan warned us that Nicaragua was becoming part of the “confederation of terrorist states,” which was “waging a campaign of international terrorism against the United States,” according to National Review Online.  Unfortunately for us, those words ring true once again.

Nowadays, the Sandistas, who helped run Nicaragua into the ground, may return to power.  Ronald Reagan may be rolling over in his grave.  Nicaragua could soon be added to Bush’s infamous Axis of Evil.  But that all depends on whether former Marxist guerilla leader Daniel Ortega returns to power 16 years after being kicked out of office by voters tired of civil war.

According to a Zogby poll, Ortega was leading with 35% of the vote.  And, according to National Review Online: “If Ortega’s small plurality holds, that would be enough for him to win outright in the first round, the Sandinistas having pushed through a constitutional reform that allows a candidate with just 35 percent of the vote to win without a run off, if he has a five-point lead. Ortega, an authoritarian thug who in the words of then-Attorney General Ed Meese turned Nicaragua into ‘a terrorist country club,’ giving refuge to the FMLN, the IRA, the ETA, the Red Brigades, Baader-Meinhof, the Tupamaros and others, is standing right on the threshold of recovering his throne.”

On a win, Ortega would join forces with the likes of Hugo Chavez and Fidel Castro (big fans of the United States) in an existing Latin America bloc of the U.S., which has already warned that aid and investment will cease to exist under Ortega rule.  Unfortunately, about a third of the Nicaraguan population supports Ortega.

But why should Ortega care?  Here’s a guy with allies in the world of terror that wants nothing more than to stage an anti-American front.  One of Ortega’s biggest allies is Chavez (the dimwit that called Bush the devil at U.N.), and who has used Venezuela’s oil funds to support candidates in Latin America.  And there’s always his ally, North Korea, which has close relations with radicals in the same region.  Heck, back in the 1980s, it was Kim Il-Sung who suggested that he and Ortega work to dismantle the United States.

The Sandistas even have friends in Iran.  What makes this worse is that Ahmadinejad declared himself and Chavez “brothers” just this past September.

But is Ortega the man he once was?  According to Ireland Online, “Daniel Ortega has told Nicaraguans he is not the same revolutionary the U.S. once tried to overthrow.  The Sandinista leader spent this campaign -- his fourth for the presidency -- preaching harmony, love and reconciliation, often with John Lennon's ‘Give Peace A Chance’ playing in the background.”

We’ll have to wait and see. One thing’s for certain: Ronald Reagan will be rolling.
