RADAR for October 31, 2006

Housing's Zombie Bite

By The WaveStrength Team

Macro Outlook:
It only seems suitable to offer up the walking dead for this particular edition of Radar. And if you listen to the news, there ain't nothing deader than housing right now.

This sector is so toxic, its zombie bite is being blamed already for the recession that hasn't even happened yet!

And yet, it continues to roam about: housing sales are down but houses are indeed still selling. And homebuilders' stock prices are quite appropriately depressed, what with that multi-month inventory overhang and all.

Down perhaps, but not immobile: The SPDR Homebuilders ETF (XHB) may be off some 25% from its April high. But it's up 20% from its July low.

My suggestion: Buy this monster every time it returns to its coffin for rest: it will rise again with the next full moon.

Market Trends:
Every few weeks when I visit my father, we sit around and talk about world news. My father, in the mid Baby Boomer age group, reads three newspapers with his morning coffee and watches CNN all day while working on the house.

In contrast, I read the news all day long, which is part of our job here: watching widespread information affect the market in waves. I have quicker access to up-to-the-minute news updates… but my father's news is five hours old.

That's why it doesn't surprise me that newspaper circulation continues to fall. (After more than fifty years, my father still rides his bike to the paper box instead of having it delivered, so he's a little behind the times regardless.) Weekly newspaper circulation of our 770 national newspapers for the six months ending September 30 fell 2.8%.

When it's easier to access up-to-date information at the touch of a button on wireless devices that fit in your pocket, why carry around a bulky newspaper roll?

This leads in to one of the most interesting plays we've ever opened up to WaveStrength Trader… which you'll receive today.
