Market TrendsIndustry news released today indicates that shoppers are taking more to department stores for the holiday shopping season than specialty retail shops. This was semi-obvious yesterday, when companies like Pier One Imports Inc. (PIR:NYSE), Ann Taylor Stores Corp. (ANN:NYSE), and Abercrombie & Fitch Co. (ANF:NYSE) all failed to meet seasonal expectations.According to the International Council of Shopping Centers, department store sales increased a whopping 4.6% in November… compared to only 0.2% at specialty retail stores open at least a year. Of course, the real indication of sales will be the ten days leading up to Christmas… where online sales and store sales are always the highest for the season.
